Venue type: Castle / Fort
Description: Caverswall Castle was built by Sir William-de-Caverswall a Knight of Edward I in 1275, when he received a license to crenulate his Saxon manor house. Caverswall is mentioned in the doomsday book, and legends speak of links with King Arthur's Court.
Rebuilt by the Mayor of Staffordshire in 1625, in the Jacobean fashion of the day, the Castle still retains the original parapet walls and turrets, Norman tower, bridge and dungeon.
A 13th Century Staffordshire jewel that nature has blessed with beautiful surroundings, Caverswall Castle has enjoyed a rich and diverse history, and remains famed for its extensive and reflective moat. Now privately owned, the Castle is undergoing complete restoration and will be available for viewings from February and for hire from May 2007.
Situated in the idyllic rolling Staffordshire countryside, and set in extensively landscaped gardens, the Castle is located in the Tudor Village of Caverswall just 1 mile from the A50, and only 10 minutes from Junction 15 M6.
Enter Caverswall Estate through grand gates, and then approach via a majestic tree lined avenue with hanging lanterns. The Castle is naturally hidden by mature oaks and lime trees and set in very private grounds, enjoying a lovely tranquil grace. Truly a fairytale scene
