Historic Building Description: This magnificent Tudor-Jacobean country house dates back to the 1500's and has been described as the Hampton Court of the North. It has it’s Royal connections and is the birthplace of the notorious Lord Darnley, the infamous husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.The House is now licensed to hold weddings and civil partnership ceremonies and provides both grandeur and intimacy. Set within 1500 acres of beautiful gardens, mature woodland and rolling parkland it is the perfect setting.
There are a number of exquisite rooms within the House that are both licensed for Civil Ceremonies and available for dining. In addition, the South Terrace is perfect for a drinks reception, allowing you and your guests to take in the spectacular countryside and surroundings.
The Dining Room
The Dining Room is situated on the ground floor and is available for up to forty guests at a ceremony and seats twenty for dinner. A truly majestic room overlooked by the spectacular heraldic overmantel bearing the arms of Mary Queen of Scots.
The Still Room
A quirky intimate room that has recently re-opened after major restoration. Originally the room was used to make preserves and beverages in and today its purpose built china presses display a huge range of ceramics. This room is available for Civil Ceremonies for up to 40 guests and dinners for up to 20 guests.
The Great Hall
In the 16th century the Great Hall was the space traditionally used for feasting and celebrations. It is an excellent venue for a larger wedding ceremony or for a dinner for up to one hundred guests. It has exits into the courtyard of the House as well as straight onto the South Terrace.
