Manor House Description: The imposing Grade II* gothic revival mansion is set within the extensive grounds in the rolling Staffordshire countryside. The Heath House is situated 1 mile east of the villages of Upper Tean and Lower Tean. Stoke-on-Trent is 10 miles to the west, Derby is 25 miles to the east, Stafford is 15 miles to the south, and Alton Towers is just 2 miles away. The attractive market towns of Uttoxeter, Ashbourne and Leek are also nearby.
Secluded and unspoilt this magnificent Victorian house provides an elegant venue for weddings, corporate entertaining and private events. The house has now been in the ownership of the same family for five generations and having been occupied as a family home for nearly two hundred years, the house and grounds have an intimate feel and the house keeps its warm spirit of hospitality to this day, creating special memories for you and your guests to treasure.
With stunning views across the 127 acre parkland and surrounding countryside the magnificent gardens include a classical Regency Orangery overlooking a sunken rose garden with clipped box hedging and stone balustrades. In early summer the surrounding woodlands are ablaze with masses of flowering rhododendron in shades of red and orange, while in autumn mature specimen trees present a spectacular palette of autumn colours.
The Philips family purchased the estate in the 1680s. The textile company, Tean Hall Mills, was founded by the family in 1747 and quickly prospered. Following the succession of John Burton Philips to the estate in 1834 the original house was demolished, and the construction of a new mansion was commissioned. John Burton Philips traveled through Europe in 1830s returning with furniture and paintings to furnish the house, much of which remains on display today. Built in 1824 the orangery was incorporated in to the design for the gardens and surrounding grounds.
The Heath House has a long association with the Red Cross after being requisitioned by the Red Cross for use as an auxiliary hospital during the Second World War. Approximately 2000 men convalesced at the house before returning to The Front. Florence Nightingale ‘The Lady with the Lamp’ was also a visitor to The Heath House after the Crimean War.
Three rooms within the house are licensed for civil ceremonies, the largest being the Dining Room, which seats up to 70 guests. In addition the Orangery provides a unique setting for couples wishing to hold their ceremony in an outside setting, with guests seated on the lawn.
