6 Top Tips from a Wedding Planner

Our wonderful wedding planning expert, Nadia Wood of Amulet Weddings and Events, teaches us how to avoid stressful wedding planning and has shared her top tips for brides-to-be with us, so you can rest assured that you and your fiancé really can actually enjoy planning the wedding of your dreams…

Having planned a large number of weddings in the UK and destination weddings across Europe, Nadia is the perfect person to inspire you to plan your big day without the stress!  Best Wedding Industry Web Site Finalist 2017, Nadia, has worked with lots of brides and grooms who’ve lost their way while trying to juggle the organisational, financial and emotional rollercoaster otherwise known as ‘Planning a Wedding’, and she’s described how it makes her sad to see them in such a way: “It doesn’t have to be like this!” She’s come up with these 6 top tips to help you succeed!  Nadia cleverly suggests printing these off and displaying them on the fridge.

1. Budget

Call me a killjoy, but Nadia agrees with me: it is incredibly important to ascertain your budget from the get-go to avoid any unnecessary stress, debt or pressure. What can you realistically afford? You then need to give yourselves a buffer for any unexpected costs as well. Are you funding the wedding yourselves, or are your families chipping in? Will you be doing some Wedding DIY? If you’re going to be using a loan or credit card to pay for some of your wedding, ensure you keep your budget in mind. Nadia recommends that you create a budget sheet so you can keep tabs on spending. You could use a planning book like My Little Wedding Book, or there are lots of apps available.

2. Priorities & Values

Take the time to sit down with your fiancé and jot down the things that really matter to you both. What pops into your head when you think of your Wedding day? Is an awesome immersive experience that you picture, or tables spread with a scrumptious banquet? It’s key that you keep it simple – it’s really easy to get carried away, so once you’ve written a list, you then need to add what actions will achieve it: book the photo booth, call the perfect caterers. By planning in bite-sized chunks you’ll be ticking off your priorities, allowing time to manage the smaller jobs, and you won’t be overwhelmed.

3. Theme

When deciding on your wedding theme, Nadia suggests that you keep it personal and incorporate your passions as a couple – do you love the beach? Or have a shared favourite childhood book? Do you share a favourite sport? If you’re not sure where to start, then do some research together on WeddingVenues.com, Pinterest or Instagram to see what you & your fiancé like and dislike.

The possibilities really are endless, but start at the beginning and keep it simple. Once you’ve made a decision, have a think about how you can bring your theme to life and make it your own. Create a mood board of things you love, that both of you can add to! For further styling ideas look on Nadia’s website or on our WedVen blog, where you’ll find inspiration from our venues – like this beautiful Beauty and the Beast inspired wedding photo shoot at Silchester House.

4. Support

Your bride and groom squads are sorted, you now need to figure out who else is on-board to really help you. Realistically, who is going to be there to offer you both emotional as well as organisational support whilst you plan your big day? Are your parents and in-laws keen to get involved? Hopefully you can count on your family and friends to be there whenever you need a little pep-talk or an emergency chocolate run! However, if the thought of every Tom, Dick and Harry giving you their tuppence-worth fills you with dread then you could hire a Wedding Planner like Amulet Events who’ll support you in creating the day you’ve been dreaming of.

5. Escape

Amidst all the planning and rushing about trying to fit it all in, it’s easy to get caught up in the nitty-gritty and forget why you’re getting married in the first place! So it’s important to find a little time to escape from it all and think about yourselves – in the words of the Black Eyed Peas: “where is the love?”

Nadia advises you to “leave the Wedding planning folder at home and book a Spa day, a walking holiday or if you have children take them on a fun day out.” However, she is quick to remind us that it doesn’t have to break the bank! The important part is taking the time to remember why you’re saying “I do” and just enjoy one another’s company away from everyday life.

6. Have Fun

As an experienced wedding planner, Nadia knows that this is one of the most important days of your life and you want it to be perfect, but she is also an expert who advises you to keep it light-hearted during the planning process.  Remember your list of bite-sized chunks and allow yourselves time. Relish your planning, and then savour the big day itself; be appreciative of everyone that is able to share it with you.

The aim of these top tips is to remind you of what matters most to you both and to bring joy to the planning process as you count down the weeks to your big day! Don’t forget that this is about celebrating you as a couple, not what society or anyone else wants!

Remember that there’s tonnes of great advice on the WeddingVenues.com blog, style inspiration on our Pinterest boards and other social media, and you can get in touch with the very lovely Nadia Wood at Amulet Weddings & Events for further words of wisdom, or book her in for a wedding consultation.
