Splendiferously Gloriumptious Wedding Venues

If you can explain the difference between Miss Trunchbull and Miss Honey, or who has two Aunts: Spiker and Sponge, or you know that of Boggis, Bunce and Bean, there’s one fat, one short, one lean…then you’re probably after a venue with a lot of character and oodles of fun. You’ve definitely come to the right place! We here at WeddingVenues.com are delighted to share with you some of our splendiferous venues that would make your wedding truly gloriumptious!

You and your husband-to-be share a love of Roald Dahl’s books and need to find a venue to fit in with your theme, so in the hope that we can help any biffsquiggled couples, here are a few of our venues that might fit a Razztwizzler of a wedding…

Woodhorn Museum, Northumberland

This industrial luxe venue is perfect for a Whizzpopping wedding extraordinaire! The magnificent metal work and the glass construction definitely bring to mind Charlie and the Chocolate Factory along with the follow up The Great Glass Elevator.  At Woodhorn, you can say “I Do” in the intimate surroundings of one of the Winding House ceremony rooms, sign the register on the colliery manager’s desk and then party till your hearts’ content in the light and airy top floor room with its fabulous views across the site, the park and beyond.

Your guests will be fascinated by the amazing buildings of this former colliery, and the stunning architecture – including the original pit wheels and the site – offers you a unique backdrop for your wedding photographs.

Woodhorn Museum can offer you the Workshop Galleries for your wedding which is a completely self-contained and versatile space that you can personalise and transform into whatever you wish it to be! Perhaps you might design your very own Chocolate Room (Oompa Loompas optional!). I love all the exposed walls and the industrial piping.  This venue is splendiferously giganticus!

Denbies Wine Estate, Surrey

Reminiscent of something out of George’s Marvellous Medicine, you could have a wedding at the stunning vineyard of Denbies, Dorking. I grew up down the road from here, and have been for many dog walks among the vines and I’ve attended a rather lovely wine tasting. It is an incredibly beautiful venue with breathtaking views across the Surrey Hills countryside and the famous Box Hill. And their award winning wine is truly Dahlicious! You’d be a Twit not to get married here (#sorrynotsorry).

Denbies Wine Estate has four areas available for civil ceremonies, and your drinks reception can be offered in the Garden Room and the adjacent Cloisters Pavillion which is a really pretty courtyard area, or you can choose the atmospheric vaulted cellars, as pictured above.  The Conservatory can seat up to 300 guests for your wedding breakfast, where your guests can enjoy the central water feature and tropical plants that help to create a relaxed dining experience.

Share your love of all things Dahl by sprinkling happiness upon your guests in the bright and contemporary surroundings of the Denbies Estate.  Indulge your inner child by taking a ride on the engine through the vineyard or playing hide and seek in the vines!

Coombe Lodge, Bristol

Coombe Lodge is a grand Country House Estate nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills and is a wonderful setting for wedding receptions and civil ceremonies. With fantastic views across the Chew Valley and graced with its own elegant gardens, Coombe Lodge has magically retained the style and elegance of its past. This venue has made the Roald Dahl list due to its large number of windows – definitely a job for the Giraffe, Pelly and Me! And the romantic woodlands would be perfect for a Fantastic Mr Fox inspired ceremony.

This spectacular venue can comfortably seat 170 guests for your wedding breakfast, but also has stunning grounds that you can make the most of in the summer months.  They are licensed for civil ceremonies, with a choice of rooms, and a welcoming team of wedding staff to cater for your every need. This art deco inspired corridor reminds me of the hotel in The Witches, where the international witches convention is held, and where Luke was turned into a mouse when he discovered them.  Just look out for any ladies in pointy-toed shoes, or wearing arm length gloves and scratching their heads…

Askham Hall, Cumbria

I chose this beautiful venue for our Roald Dahl themed shortlist because of the romantic gypsy caravan they have on site, similar to that which Danny the Champion of the World inhabited with his father.  Not only do they have the quirky caravan where you can sign the register, the venue itself is to-die-for. Askham Hall is a distinctly different place to say ‘I do’.

This Lake District gem features the stunning Grade II listed Bank Barn which has gorgeous bare stone walls and an open beamed oak ceiling, together with romantic twinkly lights, stylish décor and large glass doors, make it a truly unique setting for a wedding reception all year round. Askham Hall offers wedding menus bursting with seasonal style and ingredients gathered fresh from the Lowther family estate.  There are two stunning churches nearby and is licensed for civil ceremonies, so no need to travel miles.

BMA House, London

A gloriously grand building, BMA House in Bloomsbury is certainly a sight to behold.  However it’s not the architecture that brought this venue to the fore of my mind- it’s made the Roald Dahl shortlist due to it’s hospitality specialisms! They can throw you the most splendiferous 1950s wedding there, which could work really well with a number of Roald Dahl’s books: BFG, Matilda, Danny the Champion of the World, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach…the list goes on!

Their 1950s package includes a quintissentially British afternoon tea for your guests, complete with vintage style cocktails!  I’m picturing cocktails named Dahl-stylee: “Fizzy lifting drink” or “Witches Brew”. Served on beautiful vintage china with dainty teacups hired in from Beyond Vintage, the afternoon tea will feature an assortment of handmade savoury bites followed by delicious scones with clotted cream and jam. Centre stage will be the wedding cake, served as a tiered set of delicate fairy cakes, decorated to suit your theme.
